The Life Aquatic

As an aspiring writer, I don’t pay my bills with my fiction.  I have a day job.  I’m fortunate that I’m one of those lucky people who loves what he does.  I work in the ocean, which is an incredible place, and every time I realize that I get paid to do it, it boggles my mind.

I’ve been asked by friends why the ocean never seems to play a significant role in my fiction.  In the past, I think that’s been true, and it’s reflected in my published fiction to date.  I’m not sure why.  The ocean is certainly awe-inspiring.  I’ve usually attributed it to my shortcomings as a writer—I simply don’t think I’ve had sufficient skills to capture the majesty, beauty, and enormity of the ocean.

Over the past six months, however, the ocean has been a significant source of inspiration.  I’ve written several pieces with nautical themes.  So what has changed?  I’m certainly a better writer today than I was yesterday, but am I good enough?  I don’t know, so I’ll have to let the stories do the talking.  It’ll be interesting to see whether any of them actually make it into print.

Daily Writing Targets

I’ve had debates with other writers about the value of setting daily writing goals.  I know every writer is different, but I find daily goals valuable because they give me something to strive for every day, and as I’ve mentioned before, I’m a goal-oriented person.  For me, the primary reason for a daily goal was to reinforce the importance of writing consistently, even during those time when inspiration might be lacking, or I might be tired, or I might want to do something else for whatever reason.  If I want to eventually write fiction for a living, I need to treat writing as a job (albeit an enjoyable one) and not a simple hobby.  That means showing up for work every day.

Since this was the first year I set a daily writing goal for myself, I set a modest target of 500 words.  I still hold down a full-time, non-writing job, so my time to write is limited.  I thought about setting a minimum time spent writing, but I decided that my goal was “words on paper” and not time spent writing.

After six months, this approach has worked well.  I’ve written or edited nearly 125,000 words in six months, equating to twelve short stories and dozens of story critiques for fellow writers.  This pace puts me well ahead of my 500-word-per-day goal.  In terms of getting the consistency I mentioned above, I’ve reached my daily goal on about 90% of the days.

So what has this all done for me?

By any measure, I’ve had my most productive six months of writing in my life.  I’ve written and sold (to good markets) more stories than ever before.  I attribute this directly to my daily writing target.  Maybe next year I will up my words-per-day by a few hundred—imagine what I might accomplish then.

Fellow “Monster” Sells a Tale

I belong to a writing group called Hopefull Monsters (yes, the extra “L” is not mistake—at least that’s our story and we’re sticking with it).  We’re all aspiring writers obsessed with speculative fiction.  We’re sprinkled around the world, so I don’t think any of us have ever met in person (at least not in this section of Hilbert Space), which might actually be a good thing.

A few days ago, I announced my sale of “Still Life Through Water Droplets” to Daily Science Fiction.   I was excited to hear that one of my fellow Monsters, Colum Paget—a big-idea man and very good writer—also recently sold a story to DSF.  “Inconstant Nature” is his second sale to DSF (I recommend you check out his previous-published piece, “Imaginary Enemies“).  Congrats to him, and keep your eyes open for Colum’s forthcoming story.

Goals

Not everyone is a goal-oriented person, but I am.  I think it’s important to have concrete goals to work towards.  If nothing else, goals give me the opportunity to reach milestones, which, if nothing else, makes me think I’m making progress.  Progress is good, right?

This is the first year I have gotten serious about my writing.  I’ve always dreamed of writing professionally.  I even gave it a try a long time ago—I’d rather not say how long—but gave up.  Back in 2008, I wanted to try again.  To my pleasant surprise, I had some success, but things were moving along slowly.  I decided this year that if I wanted to make a significantly jump in my writing craft and sales, I needed to set firm goals for what I wanted to accomplish.

I kept my goals simple and reasonable—setting unreasonable goals is discouraging—and I review them quarterly to assess my progress.  I’ll probably post about some of my progress in the future, but for now, here’s a summary of my goals:

  1. Write and/or edit at least 500 words per day
  2. Finish the novel I started last year
  3. Finish at least ten short stories
  4. Make at least forty story submissions or four sales

I will say that after six months, I’ve exceeded my goal by light-years.  I’m not going to rest on my laurels—gads! a cliche—I have no intentions of slowing down.  I’ve got a positive feedback loop going right now.

“Still Life” Sold to Daily Science Fiction

Jonathan Laden and Michele Barasso, the editors at Daily Science Fiction, notified me today that they want to buy my story “Still Life Through Water Droplets.”  I’ve tried several times (unsuccessfully) to get something in this publication, so I’m excited to finally have one of my stories accepted.

“Still Life” was under consideration for quite some time.  I was about to write a little blurb about how hard it is to wait, but I guess there’s no need anymore.  It’s much more rewarding to write about a story getting accepted by a good pro market.  So check out Daily Science Fiction every Monday through Friday when they post a new story and make sure you don’t miss my little piece when its turn finally comes up.

Author Bios

One of the things I hate to do is write author bios for publication.  Recently, I’ve had to write  a couple for some stories coming out in the near future.  I never know what to write.  Do I try to be funny?  I’ve never thought of myself as a funny person.  How serious can I be before I come off sounding pompous?  I might be pompous, but I don’t like to sound pompous.  Should I tailor my bio for each individual publication?  (Not that this is a significant problem because I’m don’t publishing much…yet.)  Most importantly, how much do I actually say about me?  I’m a person who likes my privacy, but if I don’t say anything about me, then it isn’t a very good bio, now is it?  Hmmm….I guess I better figure this out and finish the one I owe Lightspeed Magazine.

Travel and Inspiration

I’ve spent a considerable amount of time traveling this year, more so than I have in the last few years.  The travel has really spurred my imagination and inspired story arcs, characters, or settings for several recent stories.

In January, I visited Indonesia.  This nation of 17,000 islands is a sensory Nirvana with its rich smells, tantalising tastes, and coral reefs that are simply otherworldly in their beauty.  In addition to being one of the most amazing places I have ever visited, it was also inspiring as a writer.  In the past few months, I’ve written three stories that have direct connections to this trip, including “Thief of Futures,” which was recently accepted at Lightspeed Magazine

So anyone out there in need of inspiration, I suggest you hop in your car, jump on a plane, set to sea on a boat, or simply go for a long walk and experience something new and different.

The Time is Now

If you’ve found your way here, welcome to my site.  I’ve decided that it’s finally time to catch up with the rest of world and establish an online presence, if for no other reason than to allow people to more easily find my fiction (you can go here for an updated list).  I guess that’s rather vain, but hopefully it will fill a need.

As I get the hang of things around here, I will be expanding this site, so please come back and visit.
